It has been 40 years since Markus Ryffel returned from the Olympic Games in Los Angeles with the silver medal. In addition to the medal, however, he also brought something else with him - the sport of aqua-fit, copied from the strong American long-distance runners of the time. 40 years later, aqua-fit, with its many positive effects, is now an integral part of running and health sports, as well as rehabilitation. The only flaw in the sport is that it is still underestimated by many athletes. A short portrait of the sport should now dispel any remaining doubts.

What is Aqua-Fit by Ryffel's

Aqua-Fit by Ryffel's is a gentle full-body workout for strength, endurance, coordination and mobility, consisting of two parts: gymnastics and endurance training (deep water running). Gymnastics is a series of coordination-based strength exercises, while deep water running is targeted running training. Both parts are practiced in water deep enough to swim in with a special buoyancy aid. Contrary to what some malicious tongues say, Aqua-Fit is not only suitable for older, overweight or convalescent people, but also for health athletes, amateur runners and top athletes. The physical properties of water play a great role in this.

The physical properties of water

The buoyancy in combination with the buoyancy aid enables a kind of floating state in the water. This eliminates all impacts on the musculoskeletal system and protects the joints.

The water resistance determines, among other things, the intensity of the training. More resistance means a greater effort, less resistance means a correspondingly lower effort.

The water pressure enables the heart to work more efficiently by transporting the blood back to the heart more quickly (see compression socks). At the same time, the water pressure trains the respiratory muscles more effectively.

The water temperature is usually lower than the core body temperature. As a result, the organism is constantly required to maintain the core body temperature. This circumstance, in combination with the whole-body strain, leads to a high calorie consumption during aqua fitness.

Aqua-Fit by Ryffel's - rethinking exercise in water

40 years ago, Markus Ryffel returned from the Olympic Games in Los Angeles with a silver medal. But that wasn't all: inspired by American long-distance runners, he developed the Aqua-Fit training method together with Dr Thomas Wessinghage. What began as an experiment has now established itself as a holistic training programme for endurance, strength and flexibility.

What is Aqua-Fit?

Aqua-Fit is an effective full-body workout that consists of water gymnastics and deep water running. It not only improves strength and flexibility, but also strengthens the cardiovascular system - all in water that is easy on the joints. The training is suitable for everyone: whether leisure and health sports enthusiasts, pregnant women or performance-orientated athletes.

Why Aqua-Fit?

The buoyancy of the water eliminates the strain on joints and bones, while the water resistance makes the intensity customisable. ‘Sitting is the new smoking’ - Aqua-Fit not only trains the entire body effectively, but also has a preventative effect against back problems caused by our often sedentary everyday lives.

Who is Aqua-Fit suitable for?

Aqua-Fit is for everyone - whether untrained, unfamiliar with water or an ambitious athlete. It offers a weather-independent and stress-free workout that is particularly motivating in a group. The special buoyancy aid ensures an upright posture at all times.
